In Hirel, between Saint-Malo and Mont-Saint-Michel, Avel is a specialist land-yachting school operating on the Hirel tidal flats, a broad stretch of exposed sand in the bay. Sessions depart from the centre at 4 rue du Bord de Mer: the main advantage is the large area of firm sand, with routes adapted each day to wind and driving conditions.
Which session should you choose?
In 2026, the 1-hour introductory session costs €25 per person and includes around 10 minutes of briefing before participants set off on a marked course. When conditions allow for more extensive driving, Avel also offers 1 hour 30 minutes for €35 or 2 hours for €40.
With children
The official website advertises a two-seater land yacht with an adult for children aged 5–12, costing €40 per hour per yacht when booked online. The team may change the equipment used according to conditions on the sand, so provide each participant's age when booking.
For groups
For bookings of more than 5 people online, Avel lists 2026 group rates of €20 for 1 hour, €30 for 1 hour 30 minutes and €35 for 2 hours. The centre also works with works councils and can provide a local snack, choosing between a Breton hamper and a seafood hamper.
What to know before visiting
Sessions must be booked and are dependent on the wind: a longer session is only worthwhile when the sand offers suitable conditions. Dress for the wind, sand and possible spray. Avel also holds the Tourisme & Handicap accessibility label.
