Castelnau-de-Montmiral is a hilltop medieval bastide in the heart of the Gaillac vineyards, listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. A few kilometres from Gaillac, it overlooks the Vère valley and offers open views towards the forêt de Grésigne and the hills of Toscane Occitane.
Exploring the bastide on foot
The centre of Castelnau-de-Montmiral is compact and easy to explore on foot. The place des Arcades, surrounded by brick houses, forms the village centre, with its well and former pillory. The market takes place here on Tuesday mornings, bringing a livelier atmosphere to the bastide.
The central square is pedestrianised: it is one of the best places to take your time appreciating the architecture rather than simply passing through the village.
The church and its treasure
The église Notre-Dame de l’Assomption, built in the 15th century, preserves frescoes, a carved 17th-century altarpiece and, above all, the famous reliquary cross of the Counts of Armagnac, a major piece of local religious metalwork.
Even on a short visit, the church is therefore worth a detour: it adds a genuine heritage dimension to a stroll through the lanes.
The Pechmiral panorama
To appreciate Castelnau-de-Montmiral's setting, head to the Pechmiral area. The viewpoint overlooks vineyards, the Vère valley and the wooded hills of the Grésigne. Towards the end of the day, the light on the hillsides is particularly attractive.
The landscape is an integral part of the visit: Castelnau is not just a stone bastide, but a village closely connected to the Gaillac vineyards.
Walking and cycling around the village
Several routes extend your exploration into the hills, including the Chemin de Gradille, Sentier de la Baronne and the area around château de Lagarde. On foot or by bicycle, these routes alternate between vineyards, oak trees and viewpoints overlooking the bastide.
For a longer day out, Puycelsi is approximately 9 km away, Cordes-sur-Ciel approximately 15 km and Bruniquel approximately 16 km.
How much time should you allow?
Allow 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours to explore the bastide, place des Arcades, church and main viewpoints at a relaxed pace. Half a day is more suitable if you add a walk in the vineyards or lunch in the village.
