The limestone cliffs of Bonifacio are one of the defining landscapes of southernmost Corsica. To see them from above, the Campu Rumanilu trail starts near the Saint-Roch chapel and follows the cliff edge, with views of Diu Grossu - the “Grain de Sable” - the Citadel and the Mediterranean.
How much time should you allow on foot?
The Bonifacio Tourist Office indicates that the first Campu Rumanilu loop takes around 30 minutes; allow closer to 1 hour 30 minutes if continuing to the Pertusatu lighthouse. The path runs above the shoreline: stay on the trail and keep a safe distance from sheer drops.
And from the sea?
The cliffs can also be explored by boat, kayak or paddleboard. Boat trips run alongside the limestone, inlets and several natural caves. It is possible to approach the Saint-Antoine cave, known as Napoleon's Hat; visits to certain other caves are prohibited for safety reasons.
The best time
The Tourist Office particularly recommends early morning or sunset, when the light highlights the limestone contours. From higher ground, Sardinia can also be visible on the horizon in clear conditions.
