The Forêt domaniale de la Sainte-Baume, beneath its great limestone escarpment, preserves one of Provence's most distinctive beech woods. Its cool undergrowth contrasts with the surrounding Mediterranean landscapes. For centuries, the massif has also been associated with pilgrimages to the grotte Sainte-Marie-Madeleine.
Which walk should you choose?
The sentier Merveilleux, starting from the Trois Chênes area in Plan-d'Aups-Sainte-Baume, offers a woodland circuit of approximately 8.6 km with 256 m of ascent, taking around 2 hours 30 minutes according to the route described by the natural park. Other paths lead to the cave and Saint-Pilon, with more demanding routes towards the ridge.
What makes this forest special?
The relict beech woodland, shaded vegetation, cliffs and places of worship form a remarkable natural and historic setting. The forest holds the Forêt d'Exception distinction, recognising this heritage and the importance of protecting it.
Before setting off
Access to the massif may be restricted depending on wildfire risk or path conditions. Some sections, notably the Allée Royale, chemin du Pic Noir and balcon Marcel Estruch, were subject to restrictions or reported damage in 2026. Check access orders and the condition of your chosen route before walking; a path being open one day does not guarantee access the next.
