On the heights above Huisnes-sur-Mer, the German Ossuary at Mont d’Huisnes is a memorial to victims of the Second World War in western France and the Channel Islands.
A mausoleum with unusual architecture
Inaugurated in 1963, the circular building surrounds an inner garden and a white cross. Two galleries lead to 68 crypts. The site contains the remains of 11,956 people, including German soldiers as well as civilians, women and children.
A different perspective on the bay
Beyond the memorial courtyard, steps lead to a viewpoint overlooking the salt marshes and Mont-Saint-Michel. The contrast between the broad landscape and the site's commemorative purpose is a memorable aspect of the visit.
