On the GR65 trail between Saugues and Domaine du Sauvage, Tour de la Clauze rises from a granite outcrop at Grèzes. This slightly leaning octagonal medieval tower is one of the most recognisable heritage landmarks on the Margeride crossing.
Why stop at Tour de la Clauze?
Here, the route enters more open and less built-up scenery. The tower's silhouette breaks up the grazing land and recalls the area's past as a place of control and travel. Le Puy-en-Velay Tourisme describes it as a 15th-century remnant worth seeing on the third stage.
Do you need to make a detour?
The tower lies directly on the route towards Le Sauvage, so it fits naturally into a day's hike rather than requiring a separate visit.
A visual curiosity: its octagonal shape and lean immediately distinguish it from the square keeps found elsewhere. On this section of the GR65, it is above all a landmark that gives the stage its own character.
