With Un Jour en Montagne, canyoning takes place in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the Ossau Valley. Trips start in Laruns, then the canyon is chosen according to the package, the group's ability and the conditions on the day: Bious-Artigues for an introduction, Soussouéou or Valentin for a step up, and Bitet for experienced participants.
The most accessible option notably takes place in Bious-Artigues canyon, near Gabas. It introduces the main elements of canyoning: walking, swimming, short abseils, natural slides and jumps. Here, jumps, slides and abseils can be bypassed, allowing everyone to progress at their own pace. The Oxygène package is offered from age 10, with a stated minimum of 135 cm and 30 kg.
Canyoning near Pau or via ferrata?
Un Jour en Montagne runs its canyoning trips from Laruns, around 40 minutes from Pau. The operator also offers the Hourat via cordata, a vertical activity distinct from canyoning: it requires a separate booking and is aimed particularly at participants comfortable with heights, from age 12. The via cordata meeting point is also at the school car park in Laruns.
Several ability levels
- Oxygène: an introduction for families and beginners.
- Aventure: for sporty participants with previous experience, generally from age 13 or 14 depending on the package.
- Envergure: more technical routes, notably in Bitet canyon, for experienced participants in very good physical condition.
Trips range from approximately 2 hours 30 minutes in the canyon to a full day. Depending on the package, the season runs from April to October.
