In Portes, the château overlooks the Cévennes with a very distinctive silhouette: its Renaissance spur forms a stone prow, earning it the nickname “Vaisseau des Cévennes”. Following a substantial period of restoration, Château de Portes is welcoming visitors again, with partial access to areas of the monument depending on the day and conservation requirements.
What can you visit?
The route lets you explore the medieval fortress and the open Renaissance sections, with occasional guided tours providing access to the interior of the Château Neuf and the roof terrace. The site also offers sweeping views over the Cévennes valleys.
Practical information for 2026
The published admission price is €3 per adult and €2 per child. The château opens on a seasonal schedule until late November. Free parking is available and pets are welcome.
A little extra: its ship's prow shape gives the château an instantly recognisable silhouette, very different from conventional Cévennes fortresses.
