Forêt de Touffou, in Vertou, is an ancient woodland of which 47 hectares belong to the Loire-Atlantique departmental authority and are open to the public. This public section forms part of a larger forest of approximately 230 hectares, the remainder privately owned.
A forest open throughout the year
Paths are available for walking, cycling and horse riding. The departmental authority recommends staying on designated routes to protect young plants and wildlife. Dogs should preferably be kept on leads and must not enter the forest pond, which is a breeding ground for several amphibian species.
The woodland is dominated by pedunculate and sessile oaks and chestnut trees, with some conifers in the northern section. The pond and wetlands bring additional variety to the landscape.
Public access is from Le Château Gaillard, via rue de la Barilotière in Vertou. Parking is free and the 47 public hectares are accessible all year round.
Touffou stands out for being close to the Nantes urban area while retaining a genuine woodland atmosphere and biodiversity-focused management.
