Just outside Dijon, Val Suzon combines a steep-sided valley, a clear river, limestone cliffs and vast wooded slopes. The regional nature reserve covers almost 3,000 hectares, bringing together a state forest and five municipal forests, several with the Forêt d'Exception® quality label.
Why go walking here?
Trails cross very different environments: cool woodland along the Suzon, forested hillsides and more open areas below the cliffs. This diversity helps explain the site's exceptional plant life, supported by the meeting of several climatic influences.
The regional nature reserve has protected this forest landscape and its habitats since 2011. In 2022, the Forêt d'Exception® label was renewed and extended to several municipal forests in Val Suzon.
The extra touch
A walk here isn't just a stretch of uniform forest: changes in terrain, the river and limestone outcrops continually transform the landscape. This alternation of valley floor and wooded plateaus sets Val Suzon apart from large lowland forests.
