On Place de la Croix de Bourgogne in Nancy, Le Lupin is a family-run ceramics studio. Its introductory sessions let visitors try modelling, wheel throwing, decoration and glazing in small groups, with no previous experience required.
For beginners: wheel throwing
The pottery-wheel introduction lasts 2½ hours with a maximum of four participants. The aim is to learn the first techniques: centring the clay, raising the walls and shaping your piece. The currently advertised price is €75, including clay, equipment, firing and glazing.
What happens to your creation after the workshop?
You don't take the piece home immediately: the team handles drying, firing and finishing. Allow around one month before collection, as the pottery goes through the full making process.
Before you visit
For more comfortable work at the wheel, keep your nails short and remove rings and bracelets. Aprons are loaned on site. Discovery days and longer courses are also available for exploring several techniques in the same studio.
The extra touch
Le Lupin presents ceramics as a complete process, not merely decoration: shaping, coloured slips, firing and glazing are all part of the experience.
