The Sentier viticole de Thann climbs the slopes of the Rangen, a spectacular vineyard overlooking the town at the entrance to the Vallée de la Thur. The route helps explain why this very steep hillside, on soil of volcanic origin, holds a special place among Alsace's vineyards.
Which walk should you choose in the Rangen?
The route is marked by 18 interpretation panels. Several alternatives allow you to adapt your outing:
- a more accessible out-and-back walk along the cycle path;
- a family loop of around 3 km via the Chemin Montaigne;
- a more demanding route of around 5 km climbing to the Croix du Rangen.
Why is the vineyard so distinctive?
The Rangen covers around 18.5 hectares and some slopes approach 45°. The entire hillside is classified as Alsace Grand Cru, a distinctive feature clearly visible in the landscape, with rows of vines clinging to the slope.
The extra touch
For a very full half-day in Thann, the walk can be combined with the Chapelle Saint-Urbain followed by the climb to the ruins of the Engelbourg and its famous Œil de la Sorcière. The vineyard and castle then tell two very different sides of the terrain that shapes the town.
