Lunch in the heart of the Marché Central de Nancy
L'Impromptu is located directly inside the Marché Central de Nancy, on place Henri-Mengin. Here, the setting is not a recreation: the restaurant works among the stalls and prides itself on food prepared that very morning using fresh market produce. If a product is unavailable or a dish has sold out, the menu may therefore change during service.
Nancy Tourisme describes it as a Maître-Restaurateur established in the heart of the market halls for over twenty years. This location gives the meal a real connection with the neighbourhood: first you see the market in action, then you find its produce on your plate a few metres away.
The 2026 menu: French cooking, market produce
The current menu combines French classics, seafood and more hearty traditional dishes. A few 2026 guidelines:
- marrow bone: €9;
- 6 fines de claire oysters: €14;
- semi-cooked foie gras: €15;
- quiche lorraine: €9;
- hand-cut beef tartare: €20;
- Lorraine-style calf’s head with gribiche sauce: €22;
- kidneys with mustard: €22;
- beef fillet: €26;
- fish of the day depending on deliveries: €23.
The dish of the day is advertised at €15, starter + main or main + dessert options at €20, and the “Retour du Marché” menu at €25. A seafood platter for two is available by reservation at €85.
The restaurant explains that it does not want a fixed “signature dish”: the menu changes precisely with deliveries, seasons and what is available from the market traders.
The real little extra: the unusual market tour
L'Impromptu offers a Visite Insolite du Marché couvert de Nancy by reservation, followed by lunch at the restaurant. The covered market tour followed by lunch option lets you discover both the produce and Nancy’s gastronomic atmosphere.
The tour looks back at the history of the market, established in 1852, drawing on documents from Nancy’s municipal archives. It takes in the market halls and their surroundings, followed by a permanent exhibition devoted to the building’s history and how it operated when first established.
The outing then ends at the table, with lunch prepared using fresh market produce. In other words, you do not visit one place and then eat somewhere else: the tour and the meal tell the same story.
Three precisely timed Saturday sittings
Another current feature: on Saturday lunchtime, L'Impromptu advertises three separate sittings at 12:30, 13:30 and 14:30. This is useful to know, especially if you want to combine lunch with a walk around Nancy or the market tour.
The restaurant is open during the day Tuesday to Saturday from 09:00 to 16:00. On Sundays, it offers brunch du Marché from 11:00.
And in the evening? The market’s atmosphere changes completely
L'Impromptu is not normally a dinner restaurant open to everyone. In the evening, it mainly opens for business or family private hire for 40 people or more.
This reveals another side of the venue: once the stalls have closed and the market’s daily activity has ended, the restaurant can host group meals, corporate events or thesis defence celebrations in the much quieter halls.
For a large group, dining in a market closed to the public is probably even more unusual than a standard lunch.

Why L'Impromptu deserves the “unusual restaurant” category
Taken on its own, L'Impromptu could seem like a good market restaurant. What makes it truly interesting is the opportunity to eat in a covered market that is still operating, discover its history on a dedicated tour and then have lunch with produce bought that morning.
For anyone looking for an original restaurant in Nancy, the best choice is therefore not necessarily to book a table at random: ask instead for the Visite Insolite du Marché. This is what turns lunch into a real experience.
