In Châteauneuf-sur-Charente, Bain des Dames is much more than a picnic spot: facing Île Mattard, this landscaped riverside beach combines swimming, games, walking and outdoor activities in a very family-friendly setting. Entry is free, and the site is open all year.
In summer, swimming is supervised from 1 July to 31 August, Tuesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 19:00. Around the beach are a play area, picnic tables, pétanque courts, volleyball, a fitness trail and fishing opportunities.
The detail that makes a difference with children
Since 2023, a free-access treetop adventure area has been installed for ages 5 to 12, under adult supervision. It is useful for alternating swimming and land-based activities without extra travel.
In July and August, the Châteauneuf Vibrac Canoë Kayak club also operates at Bain des Dames, hiring canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and pedal boats. The site lies on La Flow Vélo and the Scandibérique cycle routes, with bicycle parking, luggage lockers and free charging points: it is a particularly attractive stop on a cycle tour.
Practical tips
- Food is available on site in July and August;
- Dogs are not permitted on site in July and August;
- For peace and quiet, visit in the morning or late in the day outside supervised swimming hours;
- Bain des Dames can also be a starting point for a walk or mountain-bike route around Châteauneuf-sur-Charente.
