In Vains, in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, La Ferme des Cara-Meuh shows visitors how milk becomes caramels made on site. This family farm, established in 1929, processes its own organic milk and welcomes visitors throughout the year.
A self-guided route from the farm to the workshop
The educational route is free to follow during shop opening hours. It takes in the farm animals, the milk museum and areas dedicated to farming before reaching the caramel workshop. At the end of the route, a video explains the production stages; on weekdays, visitors can watch the sweets being made and then taste the caramels.
Discover how the products are made
For a more in-depth visit, guided tours last around 1 hour 30 minutes. They cover the farm's history, explain traditional caramel- and cheese-making processes, and introduce the farm's operations and animals. The caramel is made from organic whole milk, raw cream and butter, sourced mainly from the farm itself.
An extra detail worth knowing
Cooking a Cara-Meuh takes between 4 hours 30 minutes and 6 hours 30 minutes, depending on the recipe, before the mixture is worked by hand on a cold table and wrapped using a machine dating from 1975. Visitors can also watch the cows being milked on the route every evening.
