In Marseille, Les Copeaux Marseillais teaches the basics of cabinetmaking through workshops centred on making a real object. Formats range from an introduction to wood joints to building a solid-wood coffee table.
A coffee table in two sessions
The furniture-making course takes place over two days. Guided by skilled cabinetmakers, participants deepen their woodworking skills and make a coffee table to take home at the end of the second session.
Fundamental techniques
A three-hour workshop covers two traditional joints: mortise and tenon, and dovetail. The work is done by hand, with marking out, a Japanese saw and a chisel, to understand the precision needed before tackling more complicated furniture.
A more accessible first object
Making a chopping board provides another starting point. In 3½ hours, participants discover the bandsaw, sanding and edge finishing. This progression from small objects through joints to complete furniture lets visitors choose a format suited to their experience.
