The massif de l’Estérel, between Saint-Raphaël and the Mediterranean coast, is a vast volcanic mountain range of red rocks crossed by hiking, mountain biking and horse-riding trails. It covers approximately 32,000 hectares, including nearly 6,000 hectares of state-owned forest and several Natura 2000 designated areas.
Restricted access in summer
In 2026, access to forested areas in the Var is regulated during the summer season according to wildfire risk. The prefecture's map is published daily for the following day and may prohibit access to the massif entirely. Vehicle traffic is also subject to restrictions displayed locally.
When open, numerous routes allow visitors to explore the Estérel. Among the best-known landmarks are Pic de l’Ours, reached by a walk of around 1 hour 30 minutes from col Notre-Dame, and the Malinfernet ravine, an easier route starting at col de Belle-Barbe.
Dogs are allowed in the massif when kept on a lead. Fires and cigarettes are prohibited all year round; in hot weather, plenty of water, closed-toe shoes and a means of navigation are particularly recommended.
The Estérel stands out for the contrast between its red volcanic terrain, Mediterranean vegetation and open sea views; in summer, checking the wildfire risk level is an essential part of preparing an outing.
