In Saint-Paul-en-Forêt, Lac du Rioutard offers a peaceful route through pines and cork oaks, away from the crowds at the larger Lac de Saint-Cassien. The hillside reservoir, developed in 1974, is surrounded by a botanical trail created in 2007 by the Respire association: around thirty panels introduce the Mediterranean plants growing here.
Why is this walk worth taking?
Over 3 km and around 1 hour 30 minutes, the route invites visitors to identify stone pines, holm oaks, rockroses, strawberry trees, heather, thyme and other Provençal species. It is a practical way to introduce children to Mediterranean woodland. The scenery alternates between woodland and views over the water; the tourist office describes the walk as very easy and suitable for beginners.
Before you visit
Park at the Chemin de la Tyre car park (starting-point GPS: 43.559986, 6.68999), then follow the descent towards the lake and the botanical signs. Swimming is prohibited. Fishing is regulated: check the required permits. Bring water and closed-toe shoes; in 2026, check for any summer restrictions on access to wooded areas.
Something extra: combine the trail with the heritage of Saint-Paul-en-Forêt, a village historically linked to its pine forests, heather and cork oaks.
