Since 1984, Memoranda has occupied a corner of Caen's historic centre and developed an identity quite unlike a typical bookshop. Across around 180 m² on two floors, second-hand books fill shelves from floor to ceiling, including literature, poetry, humanities, crime novels, graphic novels, children's books and books in English.
Can you sell your books to Memoranda?
Memoranda, at 19 rue des Croisiers in Caen, buys and sells old and second-hand books, according to its listing in the Normandie Livre & Lecture professional directory. If you want to sell books, contact the team before arriving with boxes: which titles they accept and their buying terms depend on the books offered.
Read and enjoy a treat in the same place
In the afternoons, Memoranda also becomes a café. Sit with a book and a hot or cold drink alongside homemade cakes and pastries, including recipes that change over time. The café opens only in the afternoons, while the bookshop also opens on some mornings.
A place connected to Caen's literary heritage
The name Memoranda comes from a journal published in 1883 by Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly. Between this reference, the well-worn shelves and the thousands of books that have passed through other hands, it is as much a place to browse for treasures as to take a reading break.
