Overlooking Mont-Saint-Michel Bay, the Écomusée de la Baie tells the story of the relationship between local people and a tidal coastal environment.
From the tidal flats to the salt marshes
The museum explains the bay's natural habitats, birds, salt-tolerant plants and changing coastline. Models, historic objects, films and interpretive displays trace the different ways people have used the landscape.
The forgotten craft of salt makers
A distinctive feature is its presentation of traditional salt production, a practice no longer carried out here. Tools used for shore fishing also recall earlier maritime livelihoods, before the growth of mussel and oyster farming and the raising of salt-marsh sheep.
The museum is on route du Grouin du Sud in Vains. Opening is seasonal.
