In Boulogne-Billancourt, the Bibliothèque et Villa Marmottan combines a collector's residence, collections devoted to the First French Empire and a living centre for research and creativity. Paul Marmottan bequeathed the site to the Académie des beaux-arts in 1932, along with his books, prints, art objects and collections relating to early 19th-century Europe.
A Napoleonic library welcoming artists too
After several years of restoration, the villa now hosts artists and researchers in residence, while preserving its academic mission. The project goes beyond displaying historic objects, encouraging dialogue between heritage, research and contemporary art.
A historic library open to visitors again
Bibliothèque et Villa Marmottan reopened to the public in autumn 2026 after restoration. The Académie des beaux-arts announces exhibitions, concerts, talks and guided tours, alongside activities by resident artists and researchers. Not every space is freely accessible every day: check the programme and booking requirements.
Before you visit
Choose a scheduled event or guided visit and check its booking arrangements rather than turning up as you would at a municipal public library. Marmottan stands out for its combination of Napoleonic collections, a restored villa and creative residencies.
