At Le Bel-Orient, in Montjoie-Saint-Martin, Brittany American Cemetery commemorates the human cost of France's liberation in 1944. Despite its English name, it is in Normandy, near Saint-James.
A place of remembrance of the Battle of Normandy
The cemetery contains the graves of 4,410 American soldiers, laid out in extensive memorial gardens. A memorial chapel and interpretive displays explain the military context of the breakout from Avranches and the fighting around Mortain.
A viewpoint with significance
The site's elevated position offers views towards Mont-Saint-Michel, along a route once used by pilgrims. Its location was also chosen for its proximity to the battle areas.
