Beside the Tinée road, the petit ouvrage Maginot de la Frassinéa can be visited with the volunteers who restored it. An outwork of Fort de Rimplas, it was intended to stop advancing Italian tanks, notably using a 47 mm anti-tank gun.
What can you see on the tour?
The guided tour lasts around 35 minutes. It passes through technical spaces and then the barracks: the engine room, workshop, ammunition store, dormitory, mess room and kitchen provide a tangible understanding of how a small fortified position operated.
A fort built from 1935
Construction began in 1935 and lasted four years. The fortification has 3 combat blocks, two generators and was staffed by around twenty soldiers. It was built directly over a spring that provided the water needed to operate the site.
Opening times and prices in 2026
In 2026, individuals can normally visit the fort from May to September, on Saturday afternoons between 14:30 and 18:00. Admission is free. Groups can visit throughout the year by appointment, at €5 per person.
What to know before visiting
The interior remains around 13°C throughout the year: warm clothing is useful even in midsummer. The fort stands directly beside metropolitan road 2205, before Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée.
An extra highlight
La Frassinéa is more than an exterior remnant: the displays and preserved rooms give access to the spaces where soldiers actually lived and worked, distinguishing it from many military fortifications closed to the public.
