From Bayonne, Shelltone Whale Project trips head towards the Gouf de Capbreton, an underwater canyon descending to more than 3,500 m near the coast. Common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales and sperm whales may be seen, but sightings are never guaranteed as these are wild animals.
How does the trip work?
The boat trip lasts around 5 hours and accommodates a maximum of 9 passengers, keeping the group small. Children are accepted from age 3. The wildlife-watching season runs from April to November along the Basque and Landes coast.
Where do you board?
Departure is from Quai Pedros in Bayonne, avenue du Maréchal-Leclerc, opposite the Hôtel de Ville and at the foot of the ramparts. The place Charles-de-Gaulle car park is about 50 m from the boarding point.
What to know before visiting
The trip depends heavily on the weather: if the operator cancels, a rescheduled outing or refund is offered. Bring sunglasses, a cap, a windproof jacket and water, and travel light on board.
