In Nice, the Sur les pas de Chagall route connects Thiers railway station with Musée national Marc Chagall through 8 information pillars installed around the city. Created with the City of Nice, this walking route places the artist in the neighbourhoods he frequented and gradually leads towards the museum dedicated to his work.
How do you follow the route?
The starting point is near Thiers station. The eight stops follow boulevard Raimbaldi, the Olivetto area and montée Maurizi, among other places, before reaching the museum on avenue Docteur-Ménard. Each pillar offers content in French and English, complemented by QR codes providing visual and audio material.
What does this walk reveal about Chagall?
Marc Chagall lived on the Côte d’Azur for much of the second half of the 20th century. Rather than simply guiding visitors to the museum, the route places his Nice story within the city and helps explain why the national museum dedicated to his Message Biblique was built here.
What to know before visiting
The outdoor route is freely accessible and can be followed independently of a museum visit. Its linear format works well for visitors arriving by train: the station is the natural starting point and Musée national Marc Chagall the destination.
An extra highlight
Taking the walk before entering the museum changes the experience: the information pillars gradually introduce the artist, before the major works take over inside the building designed to house them.
