The Gorges du Verdon in Rougon offer rugged, wild scenery, where limestone cliffs carved by the river form a canyon 700 metres deep. Here, the silence is broken only by the sound of water or wind in the pines. Changing light through the day sends shadows dancing over the rock faces, creating a sense of motionless grandeur.
The site appeals to walkers and those simply wanting to admire the views, whether for a morning stroll or a family outing. Bring equipment suited to the season, as temperatures vary considerably between the shaded gorges and sunny plateaux. Allow approximately two hours to walk the ridge trail, suitable from age 8.
The scent of scrubland carried on the wind, the turquoise reflections of the river seen from viewpoints, or the thrill of the sheer cliffs remain in the memory long after a visit. The Gorges du Verdon are not just there to be looked at: they are experienced in the silence or the lapping of the water.
