Explore Océan offers genuine naturalist expeditions departing from Hendaye marina, on the Basque Coast. Aboard the Atalaya catamaran, observing cetaceans is the central experience: common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales and, occasionally, whales inhabit the deeper waters of the Bay of Biscay and Gouf de Capbreton.
In 2026, the season runs from 29 March to 25 October. Cetacean expeditions generally depart at 08:30 and may occupy much of the day: the advertised return around 16:00 is only indicative, as the route depends on sightings and sea conditions.
Wildlife watching and citizen science
Each expedition is accompanied by a naturalist guide. Observations made on board contribute to the collection of data about marine mammals: the outing is not just about “finding dolphins”, but also understanding their behaviour, the species encountered and marine conservation issues.
Atalaya can carry more passengers on other outings, but Explore Océan limits its Cetacean Expeditions to 40 people to maintain good viewing conditions.
An extra detail
The catamaran's aluminium hull allows passengers to hear some dolphin whistles transmitted through the water. Its two bows also provide several viewing points when dolphins surf the bow wave. For sailing enthusiasts, the boat also has a mainsail and genoa.
2026 prices and conditions
For the 2026 season, the Tourist Office lists €145 per adult and €110 for a child under 12. Expeditions are open from age 5 and booking is compulsory.
What to know before visiting
- Board at Hendaye marina, shuttle pontoon, behind the Serge Blanco thalassotherapy centre in Sokoburu;
- Arrive approximately 20 minutes before departure;
- Cetacean trips are mainly scheduled for Sundays in spring and autumn, and several days a week in July and August;
- A minimum number of passengers may be needed to confirm departure;
- Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed: sailing and naturalist observation are part of the experience;
- If bad weather prevents the trip and rescheduling is impossible, tickets are refunded.
Tip: bring a warm, windproof layer even in midsummer. An offshore expedition on the Basque Coast is far longer and more exposed than a simple two-hour coastal cruise.
