In Lochwiller, in the Bas-Rhin department, the Libres Ballons du Bastberg association offers a chance to see Alsace from a hot-air balloon, with a strong community spirit. Depending on the winds, the area opens up views over the Bastberg hills, the Vosges foothills, the Alsace plain and the villages of the Pays de Hanau.
What happens during the experience?
As with any free balloon flight, the exact launch site is chosen according to the weather. Preparation, inflation, the flight and retrieval are all integral parts of the outing: this is not simply a tourist boarding experience.
A distinctive feature: accessibility
Libres Ballons du Bastberg developed the “S’envoler aussi” project, using a hot-air balloon equipped to welcome people with disabilities. This initiative, launched in 2011, remains one of the association's defining features.
What to know in 2026
Public prices and boarding conditions have not been updated clearly enough on the website to state them here. Contact the association directly before travelling, particularly for an accessible flight or if special assistance is required.
An extra detail
The Bastberg area has a rich ballooning culture and history. The association notably documents local ballooning history, including the manned balloons of 1870: a heritage dimension rarely found with leisure flight operators.
