At the summit of the puy de Dôme, at 1,465 m above sea level, Le Resto d’Épicure offers expansive views of the chaîne des Puys and the massif du Sancy. Lunch thus becomes a visit in its own right during a trip to the volcano, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the faille de Limagne.
Auvergne bistro-style fine dining
The menu is short and seasonal, with regional produce such as Auvergne trout, lentils, local cheeses and French meats. The aim is to offer a proper restaurant lunch at the summit, distinct from the site's fast-food options.
How do you reach the restaurant?
The summit cannot be reached by car. The simplest option is the Panoramique des Dômes, an electric rack railway that makes the ascent in around 15 minutes. You therefore need to factor the journey into your booking time. Walking up on the trails remains possible for those who want to combine hiking and lunch.
Terrace or dining room?
In fine weather, the terrace offers the most direct view of the landscape. The indoor dining room retains the panorama when wind or cool temperatures make being outside less pleasant. As seating is limited, booking is particularly useful in season.
A little extra
After your meal, it is best to leave time to walk around the summit and observe the temple de Mercure, the volcanoes and, depending on conditions, the paragliders.
Here, the journey to the table is therefore already part of the experience: you come not just for lunch, but for lunch at the summit of a volcano.
