On Île de la Jatte, the Impressionist trail offers a 4 km walk along the Seine. Ten reproductions have been installed in parks and paths close to the viewpoints that inspired Seurat, Monet, Van Gogh, Sisley and Alexandre Nozal.
Which paintings will you see?
The trail helps visitors place works such as Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, Vincent van Gogh's The Seine with the Bridge of La Grande Jatte, and several views of the island by Monet and Sisley. Interpretation panels directly compare the paintings with today's scenery.
Why did the Impressionists come to the island?
In the 19th century, the banks of the Seine became a popular leisure destination for boating, picnics and Sunday outings. La Grande Jatte offered painters scenes of modern life, reflections in the water and still-green landscapes.
Before you visit
The trail is free and accessible year-round. The distance is manageable and the walk takes place in an urban setting, so there's no need to prepare for a major hike.
The extra touch
Start with Seurat, then compare his compositions with those of Monet, Sisley and Van Gogh to see how the same stretch of the Seine inspired very different artistic visions.
