In Bagnols-en-Forêt, a hike reveals surprising industrial and archaeological heritage: the former millstone quarries, carved into the Estérel's red rock, and the La Forteresse oppidum. Traces of millstones cut directly into the rhyolite recall the quarry workers who supplied flour and oil mills. The route crosses rocky outcrops with panoramic views over the Var countryside.
What can you actually see?
Along the paths, look for stone discs that are still visible, sometimes left unfinished, as well as tool marks in the rocks. Higher up are the remains of an ancient fortified settlement. Pierre du Coucou and the Estérel's volcanic landscape give this outing a very different character from an ordinary forest walk.
Before setting off
The recommended starting point is the new cemetery in Bagnols-en-Forêt, via the Petit Roc track and the Col de la Pierre du Coucou area. The reference route includes sometimes steep rocky climbs: walking boots are essential. Follow a reliable route guide and do not treat this walk as pushchair-accessible. Mild weather is preferable; in summer 2026, check access restrictions due to wildfire risk.
The anecdote: these red rocks are not just decorative: their hardness and abrasive properties explain why they were used to make millstones once essential to rural life in Provence.
