Mont Lachens, known as the “roof of Var”, reaches approximately 1,714 m. From this mountain summit and its surroundings, views extend towards the Mediterranean, Var's mountain ranges and Mercantour in clear weather. The landscapes and opportunities to watch birds of prey are among the attractions described by the Pays de Fayence tourist office.
Access: the area can be reached by car from La Roque-Esclapon, via Col de Clavel or Chemin d'Esclapon, depending on road conditions. A more challenging hike is also described from Mons along the GR49; the tourist office mentions around 5 hours and 1,100 m of ascent on this route, with a return journey by car to be arranged.
Before setting off: check the weather, access conditions and whether the road is passable. The summit is exposed to the wind, and conditions are considerably cooler than beside Lac de Saint-Cassien. This site, bordering several municipalities, can be visited independently of any commercial activity.
