The church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Mons houses an exceptional collection of religious art in this hilltop village of the Pays de Fayence. Built from the 12th–13th centuries onwards and enriched in the 15th and 17th centuries, it contains six Baroque altars and altarpieces, including a high altar dating from 1680. Several items of church furnishings are protected as historic monuments.
What will you discover with the guide?
The tour reveals the altarpieces of Notre-Dame du Rosaire, Saint-Éloi and Saint-Joseph, as well as other works illustrating religious life in Mons. A collection of around 91 santons (Provençal nativity figurines) recalls regional traditions, crafts and trades. The explanations place these objects within seven centuries of local history.
Practical information
The tourist office advertises church tours on Saturday afternoons by advance booking in 2026, subject to a minimum of four participants. The listed price is €5 per adult, with free admission for under-18s. The church is in the old village, a few minutes' walk from place Saint-Sébastien. A general guided tour of Mons is also available, but does not explore the church's heritage in the same depth.
The extra touch: the importance of Baroque art in a mountain village is even more surprising than the panorama from the ramparts.
